UPP ready to pick winnable candidates — Chai

MIRI: United People’s Party (UPP) is all ready to identify potential candidates at all branches as soon as possible for the 11th state election.

Its organising secretary, Bruce Chai, said those picked would also be those deemed capable of serving the people well over the long haul, not just for the state polls.

Chai, who is also UPP Pujut branch chairman, said this yesterday when asked to comment on UPP secretary general’s announcement on Sunday that Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem had instructed the party to come up with its list of winnable candidates for the state polls.

Chai was all for naming candidates early, and not at the last minute.

“(By naming early) voters will be able to access the ability, commitment, integrity and capability of the candidates.

“Gone are the days where candidates are put in the political forefront based on their connections or because they are the favourites of top leaders.

“I think our CM sees this change in Sarawak.”

Chai also said that with advances made in online technologies, most voters were now very well informed and up-to-date on current issues.

“Being the new kid on the block, UPP needs to change with the times. We need to identify and highlight all our potential candidates early so that the people can see and access these leaders or candidates well before the state election.”
