Unemployed claims trial to possession of cannabis

KUCHING: An unemployed man charged with possessing 98.16g of cannabis claimed trial in a Sessions Court here yesterday.

Khairul Akmal Zulkifli, 21, from Taman Rohaya in Petra Jaya here appeared before Judge Dayang Ellyn Narisa Abang Ahmad who ordered him to be remanded pending disposal of the case.

She set May 5 for the case to be mentioned again at another Sessions Court prior to the trial hearing proper.

He allegedly committed the offence at the five-foot-way of a shop at Taman Desa Ilmu in Kota Samarahan around 11.30am on April 15 – the day he was arrested.

The charge was framed under Section 39A(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 that provides for life imprisonment or whipping upon conviction.

Earlier Khairul was fined RM3,000 by the same judge after he pleaded guilty to consuming drug. He was arrested after his urine tested positive at Kota Samarahan district police station.
