THE renovation to the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and its Clinical Research Centre, costing RM35 million, is currently at 84 per cent completion and expected to be completed this July.

With regards to SGH’s multi-storey car park, Local Government and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh said it would be built through a Private Funding Initiative (PFI) at an estimated cost of RM300 million.

The complex would consist of a Day-care Centre, Pathology Lab and multi-level parking bays that can accommodate 1,600 vehicles.

“Due to the nature and complexity of the PFI project, it was delayed and is now in the final stage of documentation before it can be forwarded to Unit Kerjasama Awam Swasta (Ukas) for final approval,” Wong added when delivering his winding-up speech at the DUN sitting yesterday.

He also touched on the progress of the construction of three new hospitals in the state. He highlighted that as of last month, the construction of Petra Jaya Hospital – with a scheme value of RM495 million – had reached 20 per cent while for the Lawas Hospital (scheme value of RM117 million), its Phase 1 had been completed and Phase 2A was at 47 per cent complete. On the other hand, he added, the Sri Aman Hospital project, with a scheme value of RM188 million, was expected to be completed in 2018.

At the same time, he mentioned that Miri, Bintulu, Limbang and Sibu hospitals would have their services and facilities upgraded under the 10th and 11th Malaysia Plans (MP) and four new dental facilities had been opened; namely in Petra Jaya, Kuching, Bau and Miri.

“For the 10th MP fourth rolling plan 2015, a total of 40 projects had been approved for medical and health services in Sarawak with a total ceiling of RM195 million. Out of these, 20 projects have been completed, one is ahead of schedule, 13 projects are in the planning stage while six others were delayed,” he explained.

Answering a question from Dr Wong Hua Seh (DAP-Repok), Wong said the state Health Department had filled up all the vacancies for specialist posts and 76 per cent of the medical officers posts had been filled.

“The state Health department will do its best to fill up the remaining vacancies. As of today, a total of 215 specialists, 715 medical officers and 585 housemen have been deployed in strategic hospitals and clinics throughout Sarawak,” Wong continued.
