SIBU: Those seeking employment in the state and federal civil service can submit their applications through the portal of Public Services Commission (PSC) without having to wait for announcement or advertisement of vacancies.

Being available 24 hours daily and the whole year, this would give convenience to applicants, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun said. He pointed out the new system had been very well received by the rural folk as it had proven to be very effective.

“Job seekers from rural areas can come down anytime to nearby places with Internet access to key-in their applications.

“The information entered into the system will be valid for five years unless they resubmitted fresh applications to invalidate the previous ones.

“Therefore, I hope YBs (elected representatives) and government officers will explain this to potential job applicants,” Entulu told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He was clarifying Community Services Assistant Minister Datuk Peter Nansian’s call that PSC use various means to disseminate information on vacancies available in state and federal civil service.

Nansian said many in the rural areas did not have access to the Internet. To this, Entulu, who is Selangau MP, clarified that when vacancies exist, PSC would refer to the database containing particulars of those who had applied through the system.

“All those who are qualified will be listed there, before coming to the short-listing process. They will be called for interview and from there, the process continues.”

On PSC’s outreach programmes, he explained that they were more geared towards giving advice to rural students on how to prepare for interview, including proper dress code.

Last year, he added, PSC collaborated with NGOs to organise courses on joining the civil service in Kuching, Saratok, Lundu, Simunjan and Pusa areas.

“Last year, we also organised Customer Day and Career Carnival in areas such as Kuching, Betong and Lawas to disseminate the necessary information to the people.” As Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Entulu oversees PSC besides Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning (Mampu) and Education Service Commission (ESC).

He noted through the various measures taken, a total of 5,825 Sarawakians were appointed to the civil service last year.

“In 2013, there were 6,009 Sarawakians joining the civil service,” he remarked. He also disclosed that out of 1,605,245 applications nationwide made through the PSC portal last year, 161,711 were from the state.

In 2013, he said further, applications from Sarawakians numbered 198,266 out of the total 2,120,136 applications in the country.
