PURITY: Participants of the Wesak Day procession in Kuching last night holding artificial lotus flowers – which symbolises fortune and purity in Buddhism.

KUCHING: The Wesak Day procession here last night was quite a grand affair, with 63 contingents taking part.

Spectators braved the evening drizzle and strong wind by wearing raincoats or using umbrellas to blend into the celebration.

The contingents started moving around 6.40pm from the Jubilee Ground and going around Padungan before returning to Jubilee ground.

Most of the artificial lotus flowers the participants carried were made from recycled items.

Some of the younger participants in the procession chose to dress up in a fancy manner to add to the merriment of the celebration.

Wesak Day is celebrated by Buddhists the world over annually to commemorate the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama of Buddha. Sometimes, Wesak (or Vesak) is simply called Buddha’s birthday.

It is observed traditionally on different dates in various countries in Asia.
