Miri claim state schools archery title

MIRI: Miri was crowned overall champion at the Sarawak Schools Sports Council (MSSS) Archery Championship held in Bintulu from April 21-25.

Miri Archery Association (MAA) president David Ting, who spoke to The Borneo Post on Saturday, said the team had once again made their hometown proud after winning 20 gold, 16 silver and nine bronze medals.

Kuching was second with 7-10-13 with Bintulu third with their medal tally of 2-7-14.

Meanwhile, Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin was at the training field near Kampung Sukan here on Saturday to savour Miri’s victory.

Lee said all six archers representing the state in the last Sukma were from Miri. They won three gold, two silver and three bronze.

Noting that the increasing popularity of the sport, he highlighted the setting up of archery clubs in SMK Baru, SMK Riam, SM Riam Road, SM St. Joseph, SM St. Columba, SMK Chung Hua, SJK Chung Hua Miri, SJK Chung San and SK Riam Batu 2. MAA currently has about 60 archers who are involved in their development programme.
