KUCHING: The Persatuan Tenis Bumiputera Sarawak (PTBS) A claimed a historic victory when they edged SLTA Greensports 2-1 in the final of the Greensports Challenge Cup at the Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) tennis centre yesterday.

Mohammad Norhairi Khaidir and Muhammad Zaki Pauzi gave PTBS A a winning start when they beat Brandon Wong-Rohaizat Achop 6-3, 6-4 in the second doubles.

Gilbert Yeo and Shawn Lee levelled it for SLTA Greensports when they overcame Razmee Rawi and Nor Saiful Zaini Mohd Sudud 6-3, 6-3 in the first doubles.

In the deciding and third doubles, Shuari Zawawi-Muhd Syahmi Mohammad Eshan defeated Leslie Jong/Kenneth Tan 7-6(6), 6-1 to break the deadlock in favour of PTBS.

The victory allowed PTBS A to exact revenge over SLTA after their defeat to the latter in the final of the Sarawak Inter-Division and Closed Tennis Championship in late March.

En route to the final, PTBS A thrashed both Maksak B and KDLTA 3-0 in the group matches.

They entered the semi-finals after beating Samarahan 2-0 in the quarterfinals.

They then met surprise semi-finalist Maksak B again and blanked them 3-0 once more to set up the final showdown with SLTA Greensports.

Other members of the PTBS team were Amin Tamel and Zanoren Alek.

The champion team received RM1,500, medals and the challenge trophy while the losing finalists walked away with RM750 and medals.

Losing semi-finalists Maksak A and Maksak B each received RM400 and medals.

SLTA vice president Dr Wee Thian Yew gave away the prizes.
