SIBU: Sarawak Teachers’ Union (STU) is looking forward to the transformation of having more local teachers in the state.
STU president Jisin Nyud said they were elated with the assurance given by Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Mohd Yassin last February at BCCK.
“STU is happy the Education Ministry has decided to reserve 30 per cent of all new teacher intake quota for Sarawakians starting this year.
“If this materialises, STU would like to thank the state government especially our Chief Minister for his support on the issue of teachers in Sarawak,” Jisin said.
He clarified that it is not that Sarawakians are against the integration policy but their wish for local people to be trained as teachers is so that they can serve their own children better.
“We want teachers who are ‘colour blind’ towards our children. STU fully supports our Chief Minister’s call that the multi-racial society in Sarawak should continue to remain united and live peacefully and harmoniously with one another,” Jisin pointed out.
He disclosed that STU had in fact received complaints from local teachers that some the non-local fellow teachers had been trying to infuse their own ideologies into the minds of the local children and this had made many parents unhappy.
