Tsunami warning issued for Papua New Guinea after quake

SYDNEY: A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck 150 km south of Papua New Guinea on Tuesday and warnings of tsunamis were issued.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported the event and issued a hazardous alert within 300 km of the epicentre, Xinhua news agency reported.

Geoscience Australia measured the earthquake’s depth at 98km, but reported information had not yet been finalised.

Islands in Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Indonesia, Vanuatu, Fiji, the Philippines and surrounding countries are expected to be hit by the waves.

But their potential severity remains to be ascertained. –BERNAMA
