KUCHING: From time to time there is always a threat to cyber security, thus a technical meeting on technology security and techniques is very important in order to overcome the threats.

Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin said the threats to data were not only faced by the government but also a wide spectrum of industries and individuals.

“We must take precautions and seek Information Technology (IT) experts to be with us to overcome this. Their experiences are highly needed to ensure that we are able to address any form of threats,” he said at a press conference after the official opening of ISO IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 Sub Committee 27 on Information Technology Security Techniques Meeting at BCCK here yesterday.

A chief technology officer of Cybersecurity Malaysia, Dr Solahuddin Shamsuddin, said to protect Malaysia’s IT infrastructure, the government under the National Cyber Security had decided in 2010 that all Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) agencies and organisations must implement and undergo certification for MS, ISO, IEC 27001:2007 Information Security Management System within three years.

Solahuddin admitted that cyber security cannot be protected 100 per cent but the risk can be prevented by adopting the best practices and standard which are supported by the government.

“Up to date, 75 per cent had adopted and were certified by ISO 27001:2007 and this had to be reviewed from time to time since 2007 and the latest version is 2013 version.”

The chairman of ISO/IEC JTC 1 SC 27 and Cybersecurity expert from Germany, Dr Walter Fumy, chipped in and pointed out that systems need to be upgraded every five years on average.

Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg, who stood in for Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem for the opening of the convention, said two parties are involved in ICT – the provider and users.

“Whatever technology changes, the user and provider must work together to ensure that they can protect each other from whatever technological threat and save themselves the economic and social cost,” he said.
