KUCHING: Chairman of ISO/IEC JTC 1 Subcommittee 27, Dr Walter Fumy, told The Borneo Post that criminals and ill-intentioned computer gurus are possibly among the many who love hacking into computer systems of individuals, organisations and governments.

“They just love to do it. They do it for fun and also to prove that they can do it and in my opinion cyber security is really a real threat to the world today,” he said.

“These hackers are criminals or organisations who have the advanced technology. Sometimes they get people to do their job for their own satisfactions apart from obtaining information for their own use,” he added.

Walter was met after the press conference given by Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Dr Ewon Ebin at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here yesterday.

He believed that these criminal were motivated by money. On the other hand, he did not believe that professional computer experts who are paid for their services would hack into someone else’s system as they would have to adhere to their professional ethics.

Even terrorists used cyber attacks which were very alarming and a threat to world stability and peace, he added.

“Yes. The number and the type of attack on cybersecuirty are growing and it is a threat,” he lamented.
