Sarawak senior golfers sweep team titles

KUCHING: Sarawak were crowned the overall champions in the 8th Pan Borneo Senior Amateur Open Golf Championship which ended at Kelab Golf Sarawak (KGS) yesterday.

The competition that involved senior golfers from Sabah, Brunei and Sarawak saw host Sarawak lifting both the team gross and team nett challenge trophies.

In the team gross category, the Sarawak team led by Sarawak Senior Golfers Society president Hoan Kee Hock registered a total score of 2,001 strokes (best 12 scores), finishing 69 strokes ahead of Brunei while Sabah were third on 2,177 strokes.

Team members were Joseph Lau, Jimmie Teo, Abang Abdul Rahman, Abu Bakar Kiprawi, Muas Sebli, Wan Adillah Edruce, Zayadi Sebli, Peter Sim, Chih Ching Chuang, Samuel Tiew and Ling Soon Kiong.

With the victory, Sarawak have won the team gross title for the second time after winning it in 2008 while Brunei were three times winners in 2007, 2010 and 2014.

There was no competition from 2011 to 2013.

In the team nett competition, the Sarawak team comprising Anthony Kearsley, Abdul Jalil Abdul Rahman, Samuel Tiew, Zayadi Sebli, Mohd Nasir Hussair, Anthony Tan, Sophi Nawi, Robert Elone Sireng, Mohamad Bedrie, Wan Abdillah Edruce and Jimmie Teo topped the contest with 1,732 strokes.

Second and third were Brunei (1,784) and Sabah (1,950) respectively.

Meanwhile, Wan Man Wan Hil from Brunei claimed the men’s individual gross crown when he fired a two-day total of 155.

Four strokes behind him was Joseph Lau while Jimmie Teo came in third with a 161.

Fourth and fifth spots were won by Abang Abdul Rahman (163) and Abu Bakar Kiprawi (164).

Anthony Kearsley won the men’s individual nett title with his score of 140, finishing two strokes ahead of Abdul Jalil Abdul Rahman and Samuel Tiew carded 143 strokes to finish in third spot after beating Zayadi Sebli and Mohd Nasir on count back.

Kim Mi Kyeong won the women’s gross event with her score of 185 strokes, beating Latifah Bujang (191) and Helen Liew (200) into second and third spots respectively.

The women’s nett title went to Sarawak’s only golf referee Liew Miew Jin on 145 while Annie Boon and Daisy Kon scored 147 and 149 to finished second and third respectively.

Other winners of individual events were Raya Dollah (146 – Group A nett), Bill Lu Thian Tack (147 – Group B nett), Anthony Asing (146 OCB -Group C nett) Sia Chui Seng (151 – Group D nett) and Peter Sii (154 – Group E nett).

Brunei, which fielded 55 golfers, was led by Brunei Association of Senior Golfers president Maj-Gen (rtd) Pehin Dato Mohd Jaafar Mohd Aziz while the 12-member Sabah team was headed by Anthony Asing.

Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom closed the event and gave away the main prizes.
