State to host delegates from TM International District 87 Annual Conference

KUCHING: About 500 delegates from Toastmasters International District 87 which comprises East Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia will converge at a leading hotel here from May15-17 for the District 87 Annual Conference.

Tourism Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg will officiate at the conference.

Recently members of the organising committee paid the minister a courtesy call to brief him on the preparation for the regional conference and to thank him for his support of the event.

During the conference, renowned international speakers from the region and beyond will be speaking at the various educational sessions.

One of them is DananjayaHettiarachi, the 2014 winner of the Toastmasters International World Championship of Pubic Speaking.

ShurooqAlbanna, the first Arab to garner a spot in the finals of the 2013 Championship and win third place, will also be making waves among the participants of the conference with her journey to success.

Apart from the educational sessions, the highlight of the conference will be the speech contests which will feature contestants from District 87. The winner of this contest will then represent the district in Las Vegas, USA in August .

In collaboration with the state’s efforts to promote public speaking and communication skills among students, a limited number of tickets will be made available to various educational institutions. Students of age 15 and above are encouraged to apply.

District 87 comes under the umbrella of Toastmasters International Organisation, which is a non-profit educational organization.

Since 1928, Toastmasters International has been operating clubs worldwide for the purpose of helping members improve their communication, public speaking and leadership skills.

To date, the membership numbers more than 300,000 in more than 15,000 clubs globally.
