KANOWIT: Women voters play a crucial role in the coming state election.

Dewan Negara deputy speaker Senator Datuk Doris Sophia Brodie said this at a ‘Membara’ programme held at Rumah Kubu in Nanga Tada here on Saturday.

The organisers were the Special Affairs Department (Jasa), Ministry of Multimedia and Communications and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) Ngemah Women’s Movement, and the function was officiated by Doris and Ngemah assemblyman Alexander Vincent jointly.

Doris who is also PRS Women Chief, said: “Women’s votes can determine whether Barisan Nasional (BN) will win or lose as they account for a big number of the total voters.”

She commended the chief minister for introducing changes in the administration of the state government that included the abolition of the Lanang Bridge toll starting May 25, reduction in power tariff for industrial and domestic sectors, and curtailing illegal logging.

At the function, Doris announced a RM5,000 grant for Rumah Kubu Women Bureau.

Earlier, Alexander talked on the Goods and Services Tax (GST), saying the rise in prices of goods was not due to GST but caused by “traders taking advantage of the taxation system by increasing the prices of goods”.

He announced a RM10,000 grant for Rumah Kubu Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK).

His wife Susan Clement presented three water dispensers costing RM1,500 each for the use of health clinics in Nanga Tada, Nanga Ngungun and Nanga Jagau.

They were donated by the Association of Wives of Ministers and Assistant Ministers of Sarawak (Sabati).

Among the activities were registration of new voters by Jasa and membership recruitment by PRS Youth Central.

About 300 people attended the programme which was also a pre-Gawai Dayak celebration.

Present were political secretary to the chief minister, Angeline Umis, state administrative officer Jabang Juntan, organising chairperson Priscillina Petrus, Tuai Rumah Kubu and PRS Ngemah Women deputy chief Bibi Medan.
