MIRI: Shell has been working with United Nations Global Road Safety Week to highlight the plight of children on the roads through the #SaveKidsLives declaration campaign.

Sarawak Shell Berhad (SSB) general manager Chok Chee Tsong said Shell targeted 200,000 pledges globally.

“To date, the declarations for this campaign are close to 130,000. Through this declaration, we are supporting the movement for road safety led by children around the world. Join me in pledging to #SaveKidsLives with one of my colleagues here today. Let’s commit and contribute to ensure better road safety for our children’s’ sake,” he stated in his address during the Road Safety Campaign at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall here yesterday.

He urged the public to sign up to ensure safer roads for children to get to schools and homes.

“Through this declaration, we are supporting the movement for road safety led by children around the world. They are our future and we must do all we can to safeguard their lives.”

On the event, he said SSB reached out to the community to advocate road safety through an exhibition and campaign.

He pointed that the event also served as an extension programme of SSB’s Safety Day and in commemoration of Miri City Day 10th anniversary.

He explained that Shell imposed Life-Saving Rules to keep the people who work with them, the staff and their family members safe.

“This year Shell is privileged to be able to share our safety message to the wider Miri community.”

Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin officiated the event.

Lee said according to World Health Organisation’s studies, Malaysia has the fourth highest number of road traffic deaths in 2010 in the Western Pacific region.

Globally, Malaysia has the 28th highest number of road traffic deaths thus making the country a high risk country for road safety, he added.

On this, he said there was a need for the government to continue with the road safety education in order to create better public awareness.
