MIRI: Mother’s Day was made extra special for 93 blood donors during a donation drive conducted by Sarawak Oil Palms Bhd (SOPB) at Permaisuri Imperial City Mall here yesterday.

Each successful donor received a goodie bag and a stalk of carnation at the end of the ‘Mother’s Day Blood Donation Drive’, held in collaboration with Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Chapter and Miri Hospital Blood Bank.

The event, themed ‘Mother – The Greatest Gift of Love; Blood – The Greatest Gift of Life’, was SOPB’s first-ever external blood donation drive.

“Following our first in-house blood donation drive which gave the opportunity to our staff to do the good deed, we are thrilled to be able to extend the programme with the participation from members of the public,” SOPB corporate communications executive Enki Pati told reporters.

“Moreover, on such a special occasion, we have made a special arrangement in which we are giving goodie bags and carnations to successful donors, as a way for us to say ‘thank you’ to them, as well as to all the brave mothers out there for their sacrifices and efforts for their families and society.

“For the male donors, we are encouraging them to present the carnations to either their spouses or mothers as tokens of appreciation,” he said, adding that the blood donation drive was part of SOPB’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes to give back to society.

“We understand that the Miri Hospital Blood Bank frequently encounters insufficient blood stock, especially with the Gawai Dayak and Hari Raya Aidilfitri coming.

“Hopefully, our small effort could assist the blood bank in overcoming the problem,” he said.
