SAMARAHAN: Favourites Ivan Yuen Chee Wern and Pushppa Devi of Universiti Pertanian Malaysia (UPM) lived up to their top billing to clinch the men’s and women’s singles titles in the Malaysian Universities Sports Council (Masum) Games at Unimas squash centre last Saturday.

On the first day of the men’s competition, George Lawai was the only Unimas representative to move into the second round (last 16) after blanking Sim Hong Ping of UUM 3-0.

But he found the going too hot when he met Ivan Yuen in the last eight to tamely 0-3.

Yuen advanced to final after beating Muhd Mukhlasin of UiTM 3-1 in the semi-final.

Raja Mohd Adam of UIAM finished in third place after a tense battle with a depleted Mukhlasin who had a close 3-1 win over Yovineshan Ramathas of UM in the quarter-final.

Pushppa also received a first round bye before she blanked Nurwajihah of UPM 3-0 and beat Jamie Kua of UM 3-1 in the semi- final.

She went on to beat second seed Ilya Kareena of UiTM 3-1 in the final.

Third and fourth were Jamie Kua and Julie Cheah respectively.

Apart from hosting the squash competition, Unimas was also the competition venue for badminton, table tennis and tennis.

T he squash event was participated by 36 players from 11 Malaysian public universities namely UM, USM, UKM, UPM, UTM, UUM, UiTM, UIAM, UMT, UniSZA and host UNIMAS.
