KOTA KINABALU: The unemployment rate in Sabah has dropped from 5.1 percent in 2014 to 4.7 percent earlier this year.

Sabah Labour Department director Kamal Pardi said yesterday that the percentage was still high when compared to the national unemployment rate which was below four percent.

However, he said that they were very confident of being able to bring the percentage down further.

“We are confident because there are a lot of job opportunities available,” he said at the 2015 Sabah Career ‘Kembara’ programme and Kota Kinabalu Jobs Carnival held at the Kompleks Kuwasa near here yesterday.

On the event yesterday, Kamal said that it would be held from yesterday to May 15.

He said that this was the first time his department was organising such an event.

“The aim is to help Sabahans to get jobs,” he said.

Similar events will be held in Keningau, Tawau, Semporna, Lahad Datu and Sandakan during the five-day period where a total of 30 four-wheel drive vehicles would be used.

Kamal said that more than 100 employers took part in the programme, offering more than 3,000 jobs.

The event was launched by Assistant Finance Minister Datuk Ramli Marhaban who represented Deputy Human Resource Minister Dato Haji Ismail Abdul Muttalib.
