MIRI: Parents, teachers and villagers from nearby areas came in droves to attend SK Long Jeeh’s fifth ‘Young Entrepreneurship Day’ in Ulu Baram on Saturday.

Most of the parents were from longhouses in Long Jeeh, Long Selawan and Long Silat while teachers from SK Long Moh, SK Long Anap and SK Long Jekitan also joined in the fun.

Even Temenggong Datuk Hassan Sui showed up to accompany guest-of-honour cum Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

The 5th edition of this annual event, which was organised by the school’s Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), was aimed at giving the pupils a platform to hone their entrepreneurship skills and to nurture their interest in this field.

Headmaster Saging Laing, who mooted the idea, said many things were achieved during the first four years of holding this event.

“It started in 2011 to provide an opportunity for the pupils to be active and outgoing outside the classrooms,” said Saging in his opening speech.

It was also meant to raise funds for the school to hold more activities and to upgrade facilities in the school.

Saging said SK Long Jeeh managed to carry out a number of upgrading works and added more facilities from the funds raised over the years.

“All of these efforts are meant to benefit children who study here.”

Dennis, in his speech, commended the school and its PTA for holding the ‘Young Entrepreneurship Day’ as it enabled the pupils to be active in co-curricular activities.

He added it was also an occasion where teachers, pupils and parents could gel ties and get to know each other better.

“Events such as this can stir interest and motivate all of you to succeed in life, especially in business-related fields.”

He also said it was vital for parents to continuously support their children’s involvement in academic and non academic activities.

“I must congratulate those parents who take the trouble to come here today to support the school’s activity and their children’s involvement in the activity.”

A variety of food, handicrafts and used clothes were put up for sale that day, and personnel from government agencies like Marudi Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) gave talks and held demonstrations.
