MIRI: Kam Sing Siong from Riam Road Secondary School (RRSS) has been called up by the national schools sports council to represent Malaysia at the 6th Asian Schools Badminton Championship to be held in Batam, Indonesia from May 22 to June 2.

RRRS chief executive officer Dato’ Dr. Fong Onn Min said this is the first time a Mirian or Sarawakian has obtained this distinction.

“Riam Road Secondary School is very pleased with his achievement and believes that Sing Siong will bring more glory not only to the school but to Malaysia as well. This is in line with the school’s motto ‘If I want, I surely can!’,” he told The Borneo Post on Tuesday.

Fong praised Sing Siong for his consistency as a top doublers player over the years. Among his achievements were a gold at the Under-12 level, a silver and bronze at Under-15 and a silver in the Under-18 doubles in the just concluded MSSM badminton championship held in Klang, Selangor.

He is also a two-time champion in the national level Chinese Independent Ball Games Championship.

Last year, he and his Kuching partner from Pacific Badminton Management Clement Chieng won the U-18 doubles at a national-level tournament organised by AirAsia.

Sing Siong, who is now training with Miri Badminton Association, said he was excited at the opportunity to represent Malaysia and hoped to make the country proud.

He has also been chosen to represent Petaling Jaya BC in the national professional league – Kopiko Purple League – later this year.
