KUCHING: Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Stampin chapter recently held several programmes to mark World Red Cross Red Crescent Day (WRCD).

MRC Stampin collaborated with Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) for a tree planting programme in Batu Kawa involving over 30 chapter youth members and officers.

Led by MRC Stampin chairman Chong Choon Chiang, 300 trees were planted to counter climate change.

SMK Sungai Tapang Red Crescent Youth unit members, led by teacher in charge Angelina Miang Latus also participated in a cleaning campaign at the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA) shelter at Mile 61/2 Penrissen Road.

The unit also donated 60kg of rice and pet food to SSPCA.

MRC Stampin chapter also introduced its first International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Humanitarian Education and Learning Portal to 50 Red Crescent Link members during a one-day camp at SJK Chung Hua No. 5, followed by an exhibition at a shopping mall.

The online learning portal serves as a platform for the people (particularly youths) or organisations who work with young people to engage in peer to peer collaboration and intergenerational dialogue while also learning and
sharing knowledge with IFRC experts.

Humanitarian Education involves project-based learning for children and young people to enable individuals to interpret situations from a humanitarian perspective and empower them to address challenges and take action in the spirit of the fundamental principles and humanitarian values of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

With the aim to get its members to commit in volunteering and to gain the support of the public, MRC Stampin hopes to use the portal to develop concepts and methodology to promote the Red Cross and Red Crescent fundamental principles and humanitarian values.

WRCD is celebrated on May 8 each year to commemorate the birth of Red Cross founder Henry Dunant as well as to pay tribute to volunteers who participate in the movement’s mission.

This year’s event also marked the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent’s seven fundamental principles (humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality), which unite the movement in 189 countries and are the basis of the movement’s decisions and actions with the theme ‘Our Principles in Action’.
