MIRI: Miri member of parliament Dr Michael Teo was assaulted by an unknown man near his clinic yesterday.

In the incident around 8.15am outside a coffee shop next to his maternity clinic, Dr Teo sustained a broken left collarbone, which requires major surgery, as well as cuts on his head.

According to him, the assailant used a metal baseball bat to hit him from behind.

When he tried to ask the
man why he was being attacked, the suspect ran to an awaiting grey coloured car with no licence plate at the back.

“I chased after him to the car and banged on the car as I shouted for help. The suspect and the accomplice then sped off towards Marina Bay,” he told The Borneo Post.

Dr Teo’s staff then came to his aid and notified his son Dr Stanley Teo, who was at home at the time, as well as called for an ambulance and the police.

Dr Stanley arrived minutes later and brought his father for an X-ray at the laboratory next to the maternity clinic.

“My father sustained three broken bones at the collar and he needs major surgery and will take time to recover,” he said.

Eyewitness Safri Man Othman said he was driving behind the suspects’ car and witnessed Dr Teo shouting.

“There was a car actually in front of the assailant’s car but then it managed to ease out and flee towards the Marina Bay area. I came out with several other members of the public to assist but Dr Teo, fearing broken bones, preferred to wait for his son and the ambulance,” he said.

Another eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said the assailant’s car has been spotted parked near the coffee shop on several occasions.

“I heard the shouting and came out to see and saw Dr Teo banging on the car that sped off later. This car has been frequently spotted near here. It is really scary, and we hope the police will frequently patrol this area to ensure public safety,” she said.

When contacted, Miri police chief ACP Gan Tian Kee said a Criminal Investigation Department team was sent to the scene.

“Our men were at the scene, investigating the scene and interviewing eyewitnesses, including examining a closed circuit television installed nearby the victim’s clinic,” said Gan.

He said police are investigating the case under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt.
