Public’s fast action saves woman from snatch thief

Members of the public keep a close watch over the bound snatcher before the police arrived.

KUCHING: Swift action by the public led to the capture of a snatch thief after he and an accomplice targeted a woman at a supermarket’sparking lot at Mile 4 1/2 here yesterday.

The incident happened around 3.30pm when the 20-something woman was walking towards her car from the supermarket.

According to witnesses, two men on a black scrambler-type motorcycle grabbed the victim’s handbag as they rode past her. She was dragged when she refused to let go. At that point, several witnesses chased the snatchers who released their hold on the woman’s handbag and attempted to speed off.

In their haste to escape, they crashed into the rear of a parked car several metres away and fell. The pillion rider managed to flee but left his slightly-injured accomplice who was apprehended by those in pursue. He was given a dose of street justice before being bound.

Police arrived after being notified of the incident and took custody of the snatcher. The woman, who suffered light injuries to her elbow, lodged a police report.
