MIRI: Construction of the proposed 1,200MW Baram Dam will begin as soon as possible because the majority of the people in the area want the dam.

Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem said the silent majority of Baram folk who supported the proposed dam now wanted their voices to be heard and did not want the minority of detractors to dominate the issue any longer.

“I had an occasion this morning to meet with community leaders in Baram and was explaining to them on the government’s policy and also in particular with regard to the proposed Baram Dam.

“This afternoon, they had indicated to me that the majority of the people in Baram support the building of the dam and that, representing these people, they will sign a pledge this afternoon,” he announced at a press conference following a dialogue session with Baram community leaders yesterday.

On resettlement and compensation, Adenan said the state government would follow standard operating procedure and international standards including engagement with the people who will be affected by the mega dam.

“The Baram Dam will start as soon as possible based on the original terms, but amendments will be made along the way if necessary,” he said.

Among those present at the press conference were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu, State Secretary Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Deputy State Secretary Datu Ose Murang, Baram Member of Parliament Anyi Ngau and Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau.

The Baram Dam will be constructed on a stretch of the Baram River between Long Naha’a and Long Keseh.

Meanwhile, on the High Court’s order to nullify the Election Commission’s (EC) re-delineation exercise in the state, Adenan said he would leave the matter to the EC.

“That is up to the EC. The EC will decide on that matter,” said the state Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman.

On Thursday the High Court ordered the EC to republish the constituency delineation notice in full compliance with the provisions contained in the 13th Schedule of the Federal Constitution.

The High Court judge said it is essential for the commission to publish the electoral roll, list of proposed changes and affected areas to ensure voters affected are made aware of changes.
