MIRI: The assault on Miri MP Dr Michael Teo on Friday will not dampen the determination of PKR to continue working for the people.

Ba Kelalan assemblyman Baru Bian, who branded the incident as one ‘cowardly act’, hoped it would not demoralise party members, especially the leaders.

“It is a shocking incident not only for us, but also for the people. We strongly condemn this cowardly act by the people taking the law into their own hands, and bashing people to settle whatever problems they have. It could also be to intimidate him (Dr Teo),” said Baru, who is state PKR chairman.

He said as people’s elected representatives, they were duty-bound to raise issues pertaining to the people’s interest and to do it without fear or favour.

“We take this (incident) very seriously and condemn this act of cowardice,” he said, urging police to thoroughly investigate and solve the case as soon as possible.

“If this could happen to Dr Teo, it could also happen to other elected representatives as well as to any ordinary citizen.”

Dr Teo, who is also Miri PKR chairman, was discharged from Miri Hospital late Friday night.

Meanwhile Krian assemblyman Ali Biju, who is also state PKR vice-chairman, said Mirians were lucky to have a brave politician who would never bow down or surrender, nor would he be easily intimidated by anyone.

It is said that even after being struck with a baseball bat, Dr Teo chase after his attacker and later, banged on the latter’s car as he (Dr Teo) shouted for help.

However, the suspect and an accomplice managed to drive away.

“I hope that PKR Miri and other party members not to be intimidated by any quarters under any circumstances,” Ali said.

“We would like also for Chief Minister (Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem) to personally look into this case because this is not an ordinary robbery. Police are still investigating,” he added.
