JITRA: Moral and character education should be the core business in the country’s education in order to produce individuals who are trustworthy, responsible and with integrity, said Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

The deputy prime minister said honesty, trustworthiness and integrity were the intrinsic values that formed the backbone of the country’s development.

“This can be realised if teachers always apply values such as honesty, trustworthiness, transparent and noble character in teaching and learning processes as well as in sports and co-curriculum activities,” he said when officiating at the national-level Teachers’ Day celebration at Wawasan Hall here yesterday.

Muhyiddin, who is also Education Minister, said good character and noble personality were emphasised not only by Muslims, but by all religions and beliefs.

Without integrity, even on a few individuals, it might cause great calamity to an industry, society and country, said Muhyiddin.

In a multi-racial country like Malaysia, Muhyiddin said, moral and character education must emphasised the principle of respecting differences, celebrating diversities and fostering good relations among ethnic groups and religions. — Bernama
