MIRI: The annual Dance for Humanity has come to its 12th edition since its inception in 2004, and this year the event to be held on July 26 at Miri Indoor Stadium from 2pm to 5pm will be featuring a more exciting programme.

Jointly organised by MRC Miri Chapter and Dancer Interface Performing Arts Studio and supported by The Mythical Oriental Dance Company (Kuala Lumpur), the event is set to bring together more than 20 dance groups with a blend of cultural heritage in Malaysia.

“For the past 11 years, the Dance for Humanity has been a success with dozens of dance groups of various genres dancing five hours non-stop in the name of humanity and culture.

“However, a decade has passed with almost similar content to be presented for the public’s interest.

“Thus, this year we want to bring out something different and exciting, and we promise it shall be a great one,” Kelvin Bong, founder of Dancer Interface Performing Arts Studio told a press conference yesterday.

Bong revealed that the stage setting would be more captivating than in previous years.

“Instead of making use of the dance floor, like we have seen, there will be a proper stage with seats arranged around it for people to concentrate their focus on the dancers on the stage.

“Adding to this, the performing time will be shorter. Instead of a dance marathon, we’ve decided to shorten it into a three-hour performance, with more refined and exquisite content. Of course, all the dance groups and their performances will be of the selected ones, that are set to mesmerise the anticipating audience,” he said.

Meanwhile, Bong also revealed that The Mythical Oriental Dance Company (MODC), a prestigious dance group from Kuala Lumpur led by founder Jack Kek, would make their debut here.

“Though only established about three years ago, MODC have made impression with some of their significant choreography and one of it had won them the ‘Best Choreography’ and ‘Best Dancer’ awards in the 5th BOH Cameronian Arts Awards, Malaysia’s prestigious awards that recognise local outstanding performances in dance, music, theatre and musical theatre.”

Among other dance groups who will be performing are Balti Dancers, Miri Natya Group, The Arts School, Misa Luvi, Echonism from Rainbow Chorus Miri, Lu Zhou Dancing Shadow Group, TLD Dance Studio, Kelab Tarian Hospital Miri, SUPP Unity Cultural Troupe Miri, Party Rock Crew by JIC Studio, Cultural Development Section (Ministry of Social Development Miri branch), Kelab Kebudayaan SMK Pujut, Pei Min Middle School, SJK (C) Chung Hua Krokop, SJK (C) Chung San Miri, Dancer Interface Performing Arts Studio and The Mythical Oriental Company.

Tickets for the performance priced from RM15, RM25 to RM50 are now on sale.

Meanwhile, MRC Miri Chapter vice chairman Datuk Lee Kim Shin who also attended the press conference revealed that proceeds from tickets sale would be contributed to Miri Red crescent, which would then channel the money to various sections.

“Under Miri Red Crescent, disaster relief fund, kidney dialysis centre, Miri Sunflower (for children with special needs) etc provide long term humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people.

“Besides raising funds through the sale of tickets for Dance for Humanity, we want to inculcate the spirit of caring through harnessing support from locals and the private sector as well as to enhance racial and cultural harmony and unity in our diverse society through cultural activities,” he said.
