Over RM9,000 up for grabs in Samarahan Bike Challenge

KOTA SAMARAHAN: A cycling event at Summer Mall shopping centre here this June 6 is offering prizes totalling RM9,450 for winners of its five categories.

According to event organising chairman Mohd Hadi Datuk Bolhen, the ‘Samarahan Bike Challenge’ will be jointly run by Samarahan Division Tourism Task Group, Samarahan District’s Office and Sarawak Cycling Association (SCA).

“Flag-off and finish will be at the shopping mall, with the route going to be along Jalan Datuk Mohd Musa,” he said, adding that the objective of the race would be to promote cycling as a healthy activity to members of the public, especially school students as well as those from institutions of higher learning.

“This is the aim also to make Kota Samarahan a sport tourism destination. At the same time, we strive to look for potential talents for to be introduced in Sukma (Malaysia Games),” he said, adding that the challenge would be open to both Malaysians and international participants.

“We aim at hosting at least 150 (cyclists), all of whom will receive free T-shirts. Forms can be obtained from Samarahan District’s Office and once completed, must be submitted to the office before the May 25 deadline,” said Mohd Hadi.

For the Elite Criterium category, the winner will walk away with RM1,500, while those finishing second to sixth will respectively receive RM1,000, RM800, RM600, RM500 and RM300.

For the Junior Criterium category, the prizes will be RM350 (champion), RM250 (first runner-up), RM200 (second runner-up) and RM100 (each to third and fourth runner-up); while for the Veteran Criterium category, they are RM350 (champion), RM300 (first runner-up), RM200 (second runner-up) and RM100 (third runner-up).

For Ladies Criterium and Sarawak Close criterium categories, each winner will pocket RM400, while those placing second, fourth and third will get RM300, RM200 and RM100, respectively.

There will also be exhibitions by various government agencies being held as sidelines to the race.
