Are fire doors in our buildings unlocked?

0

THE recent fire in a crowded building in a neighbouring country with terrible loss of life because of locked doors and a lack of escape routes was a tragedy indeed.

But how sure are we that loss of life from fires in even our newest and most impressive buildings cannot occur?

Buildings have fire doors certainly, as a requirement for our building and fire laws. But are they kept unlocked in case of emergency?

I fear not. Recently I discovered that in one of the newest and more previous and popular buildings, many of the fire doors on car park levels were locked.

Maybe this was for security, but it should not happen for any reason.

On many occasions these car parks are packed with cars and people. How could they escape in an emergency? Are escape routes clearly marked?

Thank you
