KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian Medical Relief Society (Mercy Malaysia) today has begun its humanitarian relief effort to the Rohingya and Bangladeshi refugees in the Belantik detention centre in Kedah.

Its president Datuk Dr Ahmad Faizal Perdaus said the organisation had started conducting aid operations inside the camp with full cooperation of the relevant authorities and would continue to do so in the same manner.

“We have conducted an assessment inside the camp, and have concentrated our aid in two main areas which are health and medical aid as well as essential non-food items,” he said in a statement today.

He said Mercy Malaysia would like to thank the authorities for providing necessary regulated access to the refugees for necessary humanitarian aid.

It was reported that 1,158 Bangladeshis and Rohingya refugees from Myanmar, including women and children, landed illegally by boat in Langkawi, Kedah on May 10, with the figures reported to be the largest ever to date.
