KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Youth Council (MYC) yesterday praised the Malaysian and Indonesian governments’ decision to provide temporary shelter and humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya migrants.

Its secretary-general, Ahmad Saparudin Yusup, said it viewed the efforts of both countries to uphold the principles of humanity and saving human lives as a top priority.

“The move taken by the Malaysian government to hold meetings with Indonesia and Thailand, involving their respective foreign ministers, is highly commendable.

“This effort must be extended to the Asean level, so that issues concerning refugees, humanitarian and border security can be resolved,” he said in a statement yesterday.

He said this problem required a joint long-term solution and the root of the problems must be addressed by the country concerned. — Bernama
