Man denies cheating woman of RM17,000

KOTA KINABALU: A 51-year-old local man claimed trial at the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday to a charge of cheating a woman of RM17,000.

Jerry Dorisah pleaded not guilty before magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to cheating Alis @ Alice Bongkok on February 16 at 10.30am at a bank in Metro Town, Inanam.

The accused was charged with cheating the victim into believing that the latter had won a 6D Sports Toto lottery worth RM300,000. It led the victim to give the accused a total of RM17,000.

The offence, under Section 420 of the Penal Code read with Section 34 of the same Code, provides for a jail sentence of up to 10 years and whipping, and fined, if found guilty.

The court fixed July 14 for case management and July 20 for trial. The accused was allowed bail of RM3,000, with RM1,000 to be deposited.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Azaman Hamat prosecuted.
