KOTA KINABALU: Sabah contractors keen on embarking on the oil and gas industry were yesterday reminded that it was not an easy sector and required them to possess the necessary expertise and capability.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Haji Aman said that many wanted to learn and join the oil and gas industry.

More local contractors would be able to participate in the industry if they received the necessary assistance, he said at the launch of the Sabah Oil and Gas Industry Business Opportunities seminar held at the Shangri-Las Tanjung Aru Resort near here yesterday.

He then urged Petronas to give opportunities to local contractors to take part in the oil and gas industry.

The Chief Minister added that he had been made to understand that there were spaces available to further raise the number of registered and licenced companies involved with Petronas.

He also said that it was the aspiration of the State Government to take part and become the main player in the oil and gas sector both at upstream and downstream sectors.

Musa also expressed his gladness towards Petronas for appointing a company from Sabah and Labuan in its Vendor Development Programme (VDP).

They are Firm Synergy Sdn Bhd from Sabah and Winner Inspection Sdn Bhd from Labuan.

The VDP is aimed at developing vendors capability, enabling them to progress from base scopes to more complex ones, and eventually undertake specialised scopes in the future.

Firm Synergy will provide conditioned-based monitoring services for Petronas and production sharing companies (PSCs) in Sabah and Labuan under the VDP.

Meanwhile, Winner Inspection will provide non-destructive testing services for PETROBAS and PSCs in Sabah and Labuan region.

To date, a total of 88 companies throughout the country have been appointed under the programme and collectively they have over the years been awarded contracts worth more than RM7.5 billion.

At the event yesterday, Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd Operations signed contracts with two local companies, Sazma Aviation Sdn Bhd (to provide helicopters and aviation services); and S.P Satria Logistics Sdn Bhd to provide supply base services.

There was also the presentation of the Outstanding Vendor Award (OVA) to six Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd contractors in Sabah and Petronas Chemicals Methanol Sdn Bhd contractors in Labuan.

The OVA is in recognition of the companies exceptional performance in health, safety and environment (HSE), respectability, responsiveness and reliability.

The award recipients under Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd comprised Airborne Travel Sdn Bhd, Barisan Samudera Sdn Bhd, SK Meriang Sdn Bhd, Pemborong Maju Bersatu Sdn Bhd (Labuan), Emas Dinamik Sdn Bhd and Asian Supply Base Sdn Bhd.

The recipients under Petronas Chemicals Methanol Sdn Bhd were EOS Marine & Oilfield Supply Sdn Bhd, Bentamakmur Sdn Bhd, Jesselton Sdn Bhd and Hyperwave System Engineering.

Representing Petronas at the event was its chairman, Tan Sri Mohd Sidek Hassan.
