Suspect who sets fire in restaurant detained finally

KOTA KINABALU: About a month after setting fire to a table inside a seafood restaurant, a local laborer was finally arrested by police here on Wednesday.

The 51-year-old suspect was nabbed after police spotted him at Kampung Air here around 8.55pm on May 20.

Based on their investigation, the police believed that suspect was the arsonist allegedly responsible for burning a table inside the Seremban Seafood Restaurant at Segama centre here with a lighter on April 24.

As a result of his act, the restaurant suffered losses of about RM25,000.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra said the suspect had been detained to facilitate police investigation.

“Police are still investigating this case to determine the motive for his mischievous act,” he said, adding that the case would be investigated under Section 435 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intention to destroy, which is punishable with a jail term of up to 20 years and liable to fine, upon conviction.
