Jail and cane for road bully brothers

KUCHING: Two road bullies, both 27 years old, were each sentenced to 13 months’ jail and three strokes of the cane for assaulting a 46-year-old contractor with a helmet.

Magistrate Portia Tham Ong Leng meted out the sentence on brothers Muhammed Nazri Azizi Sebawi and Nazariman Bujang who had hoped for a lighter sentence but the magistrate considered public interests and that they were implicated in a pending case of theft (not related to the assault).

Nazri and Nazriman committed the assault at Jalan Demak at about 3.30pm on March 16 this year.

According to the brief facts of the case, the brothers riding a motorcycle seemed intoxicated so were stopped by the contractor who honked them.

An argument ensued and the contractor accidently caused one of the brothers to fall to the ground.

The other brother rode off, only to return with two other persons to assault the contractor.

Deputy public prosecutor pressed for severe punishment for the two bullies after their act went viral on social media, causing resentment among the public.

The duo were charged with assault under Section 324 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term up to three years or whipping, or fine upon conviction.
