KUCHING: All Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia (KR1M) outlets in the state have been ordered to remove the KR1M-brand salty soya sauce (Kicap Masin) off the shelves amid food safety concerns.

Assistant Minister of Public Health Datuk Dr Jerip Susil said the move came after the state Health Department issued a notice two days ago to all KR1M retailers.

“Health officers in all divisions state-wide have gone to the ground to identify and monitor this product since we issued the notice on Thursday. We will move to seize the product if it is found to have violated the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985 as a measure to protect consumers,” he said when contacted yesterday.

Dr Jerip added that his ministry did not waste any time to send health officers and enforcement personnel to the ground to check on the product after the notice was circulated.

The notice, dated May 19, was issued under the state health deputy director (Food Quality and Safety) David Lau Chien Loung under the subject heading ‘Food Alert: Salty Soya Sauce Kedai Rakyat 1Malaysia brand which violates the Food Act 1983 and Food Regulations 1985’.

The notice ordered seizure of the salty soya sauce product at all districts with KR1M outlets according to the standard operating procedure (SOP).

As for districts without any KR1M outlet, the notice only served to inform.

The memo was circulated to health officers in Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu, Miri, Limbang and Kapit.
