SARATOK: A policeman died while his colleague was seriously injured after the police 4WD they were in plunged into a five-metre ravine on Saturday night.

Saratok police chief DSP Lee Thai Lein said the incident happened at Mile 4, Jalan Roban Lama, at about 8pm.

He said Corporal Jumali Awang Sah died on the spot, while Corporal Jali Assan, who drove the vehicle, was seriously hurt and was rushed to Saratok Hospital.

“They were on their way to escort State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohd Asfia Awang Nassar, who was attending a function at Rumah Kumbong in Sungai Ruan here.”

Lee believed Jali had lost control of the vehicle before it plunged into the ravine, and Jumali was found outside the vehicle with head injuries.

Firemen from Saratok Fire and Rescue Department took about 30 minutes to extricate Jali from the mangled vehicle, said its chief Mohamad Darul Azreen Md Desa.

Mohd Darul Azreen said the station received the distress signal at about 10pm.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
