Elderly woman dead, 4 injured in accident

SERIAN: An elderly woman was killed after a van she was travelling in with five other persons plunged into a ravine at KM15, Jalan Tebakang-Mongkos here yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Dayu Kalam, 72, from Kampung Mapu Tragu, Mongkos.

She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

It was believed that during the accident that occurred around 7.30am she was thrown out from the vehicle and sustained serious injuries on her head, body and leg which was severed.

Serian police chief DSP Chung Aik Peng, who confirmed receiving a report on the accident, said the van carrying six persons was heading to Serian town from a village.

“The vehicle was believed to have gone out of control before it plunged into the 20m ravine,” he said, adding that the van driver, who is in his late 60s, and three other passengers sustained injuries.

A 14-year-old passenger however escaped unhurt.

All the victims including the deceased were sent to Serian Hospital.

Serian Fire and Rescue (Bomba) team was despatched to the scene after receiving a distress call.

Its chief Muhammed Mirza Dzalmira Miraj said the team had to go down the ravine to bring out the injured victims and the body of the deceased.

The sedan car that landed in the ravine prior to the fatal incident in a separate case.

“Earlier on, in a separate accident around 100 feet from the accident scene, a Proton Saga was believed to have also gone out of control and plunged into the ravine about 10 minutes before this fatal accident,” he added.

Both cases were handed over to police for investigation.
