Murut dance, song in 10 languages break record

Students wearing traditional costumes dancing the Mansayau for 20 minutes to earn a spot in the Malaysia Book Of Records.

KENINGAU: A 20-minute Murut traditional Mansayau dance which was participated by about 7,500 people at the sports complex here on Saturday has earned a spot in the Malaysia Book Of Records (MBOR).

The participants comprised students, school staff, community leaders, government servants and employees from the private sector.

Mansayau is often performed at traditional and wedding ceremonies, Kaamatan celebration, Kalimaran and people sports, especially in the interior, Keningau, Nabawan, Tenom and Pensiangan.

Another record set was when ten students of various races sang a song composed by music teachers entitled “Together Building Courtesy” (Bersama Membina Budi Pekerti) in ten languages, namely Malay by Mary Grace Jane, Farhana Naslyn Suhailin (English), Nazmi Gitol (Bidayuh), Chee Yi Yin (Chinese), Elvara James (Kenyah), Liew Qing Qiu (Tamil), Cryuzella Mailis (Kadazan), Adza Shahniafira Suhaidi (Bajau), Jenith Lawrence (Dusun) and Fatma Naslyn Suhailin (Murut).

More than 80 schools from around the interior area, Kuala Penyu and Beaufort sent a contingent to take part in the event which had only targeted 5,000 participants.

Present at the record-breaking event were MBOR representatives Nurulhuda Zakaria and Suhaila Samsudin, and witnessed by the assistant director of Co-Curriculum and Arts, Ministry of Education, Muhammad Najib Ahmad.

The record certificate of recognition was signed by Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin.
