Universiti Malaysia Perlis grabs best invention award for its portable solar generator

KANGAR: Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP) won the Best Invention Award for inventing a ‘portable solar generator: 2nd Generation’ at the 26th International Invention Innovation Exhibition (ITEX) 2015,on Saturday.

The invention was made last December to assist the flood victims at the temporary shelters to recharge their cellphones during power supply cut-off due to the disaster that devastated 11 states.  In a statement yesterday, the university said that the award was given by the Deputy Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, who is also the Education Minister at the event’s ‘celebration of creativity’ dinner.

It said the university also grabbed a gold medal for the invention under the Environment and Renewable Energy category.

“The success becomes sweeter as all of 60 UniMap’s research products have grabbed 18 gold, 31 silver and 11 bronze medals out of 665 medals offered and maintaining a 100 per cent achievement as last year,” it said.

The 2015 ITEX was organised by the Malaysian Invention and Design Society (MINDS) for a 23-category competition and saw the participation of more than 1,000 products from 20 countries apart from Malaysia.

Among participating countries were Belgium, Egypt, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Italy, Japan, Korea, Moldova, Philippine, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, The United States and Malaysia. — Bernama
