KUCHING: Warriors ORC triumphed in the first edition of 1Malaysia Cobra KRFC 10s (U19) tournament at Song Kheng Hai rugby field last Sunday.

They defeated Alumni Kolej DPAH 17-10 in an exciting final.

The Warriors had advanced to the Cup final after blanking Shoaw 21-0 while Alumni Kolej DPAH thumped KRFC Blackcatz 31-7 in the Cup/Plate semi-finals.

The Plate was won by Shoaw who beat Blackcatz 17-5 while Miri Hornbill took the Bowl after beating SMK Muara Tuang 19-12.

SMK Tebedu won the Shield when they beat SMK Wira Penrissen 31-10.

Eight teams from Kuching, Samarahan and Miri participated in the inaugural tournament jointly organised by Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC) and Cobra Rugby Club under the 1Malaysia Cobra Youth Rugby Development Programme.

Cobra vice-president Tan Thiam Jin congratulated all teams, officials and match officials for making the tournament a success.

According to him, the tournament is part of the youth programme to retain and develop further talented rugby players after they complete their secondary education.

“It is hoped that by so doing the players will elevate their ability to the level required for international duty initially at the U19 level and subsequently at the senior level,” he said.

“Apart from that, the programme also aims to use rugby as a means to reach out to Malaysian youths to help the troubled ones address social problems, to foster national unity in line with 1Malaysia values, and to be part of a youth development and leadership initiative.”

“It is about using rugby as a tool to reach out to help the youth to become more employable, responsible and productive.”

KRFC president Azreen Nor Rahman said KRFC was very lucky to have been given the opportunity to co-organise this tournament with the support of Cobra and Yayasan Rakyat 1Malaysia.

“We hope this programme will continue on so that we can present more talents from this side of the country to represent Malaysia,” he added.
