Car seriouly damaged after engine fire

Members of the public help to put out the fire before firemen arrive at the scene.

SIBU: A car was totally damaged when it caught fire at Pahlawan Road, singeing the rear portion of three cars parked nearby.

The driver had earlier checked the engine of his car when he saw smoke coming from the bonnet at 3.40pm yesterday. The engine then caught fire, rendering him helpless.

A political secretary to the chief minister, Pao Kiu Chuan, who happened to be there, helped to get a fire extinguisher and joined a few passers-by to put out the fire.

Ten firemen in a fire engine arrived at 3.57pm and moved two cars away from the burning car. They managed to put out the fire in five minutes.

No casualties were reported.
