Man jailed for breaking police car window

KOTA KINABALU: The Magistrates Court here yesterday sentenced a young man to 10 months in jail for breaking the window of a police car.

Awang Zambrie Ejul, 24, pleaded guilty before magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus to committing mischief in front of a fuel station at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman here on May 17.

The undefended accused was convicted under Section 427 of the Penal Code which is punishable by a jail term of up to two years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Azaman Hamat told the court that the complainant, who was on duty at that time, received a complaint from a woman that there was a man believed to be mentally unsound at a fuel station at the City area.

Initial investigation showed that the accused was behaving suspiciously as he was alleged to have disturbed females, who wanted to go to a toilet in that area.

The police later found the accused at the City area, approached him but he threw a hammer at the police vehicle.

The police then managed to trace the accused near the State mosque, who was cycling. The police approached him again but the accused threw a hammer at the police car and broke its window.

The police arrested the accused and found a knife and a bicycle chain in his possession.

The court ordered the accused to serve his jail term from the date of his arrest.

In an unrelated case, two men were jailed by the same court for separate charges of possessing stolen items.

Mohd Nazrul Hisyam Abdul Karim, 26, was sentenced to six months jail while Toh See Yee, 23, received five months imprisonment after they admitted to each of their charges under Section 411 of the Penal Code.

The charge carries a maximum jail of five years or a fine or both, upon conviction.

Mohd Nazrul was arrested for keeping a television belonging to a man at Kampung Cenderamata in Likas on May 20 while Toh was apprehended for possessing RM10 coins at a house at Taman Jindo here on May 27.

The court also ordered for the said items to be returned to their rightful owners.
