SIBU: It may be quite difficult to generate income from the 2,000 hectares (ha) of land given by the state government for Chung Hua schools as it is located quite far away from here.

Hence, Sarawak United Association of Private Chinese School Management Board president Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming said they were now identifying a new piece of land to generate income towards assist ingthe Chinese independent schools in the state.

“Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem had agreed that if we could find a suitable piece of land, we could apply to change.

“We are still in the midst of identifying one and, hopefully, there would be something concrete soon,” Lau told The Borneo Post.

He was asked on the latest development on the 2,000ha of land.

It is reported on the media that the state government had approved a 2,000ha piece of land at Sungai Silat/Sungai Salutan/Sungai Agan in Miri for the Sarawak United Association of Chinese Secondary School Management Board.

Meanwhile, Lau had said previously that each year, the Chinese independent schools in the state incurred a few million ringgits in deficit.

The income generation from the land, once acquired, would lessen the financial burden of the 14 Chinese independent schools in Sarawak.

Towards this end, Lau said the land identified must be state land in order for them to swap later on.

He disclosed that they had identified some places, but there was nothing concrete yet.
