Smes should leverage on digital technology to accelerate growth

KUALA LUMPUR: Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) should leverage on digital technology such as the social media to capture business potential and accelerate growth by minimising expenditure.

Accenture Strategy Managing Director for Communications, Media and Technology Johan Khoo said the digital platform could benefit SMEs in reducing costs and the complexity of getting into too many things, especially when targeting higher sales and a wider network.

“With the digital platform, SMEs can get a cloud point of sale system which is easy for start-ups and a lot cheaper method, rather than using traditional ways to promote the company.

“It enables SMEs to able to build their businesses quickly, try new business models and modify whenever they need to,” he told reporters after a briefing on “Unlocking Digital Technology Potential for Malaysian Businesses” here yesterday.

Khoo said based on Accenture’s 2014 research, almost 98 per cent of Malaysians look up to the social media or other digital technology platforms to seek information on goods and services.

He also said a challenge, was the perception of using digital technology as a platform to make payment transactions, particularly for large sums of money.

“However, companies with big brand names offering such services, such as Maybank2U and CIMBclicks, have managed to control the perception,” he added.
