SIBU: Some 2,000 people from all walks of life have thus far made use of the town’s first 1Malaysia Internet Centre (PI1M) at Kampung Bandong. PI1M manager Hamsiah Jubli said as at May 29 this year, the number of registered members was 304.

“We are targeting a membership of 600 for this year,” she said when giving a briefing on the facility on Saturday. The centre started operating last year, but it was only officially launched by Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee on Saturday.

Dr Annuar said PI1M was an ideal avenue for children to learn computer skills. He stressed that parents needed to ensure their children were apt with Internet given the globalised environment. Villagers should also use the facility to tap the Internet’s vast potential. Meanwhile, Malaysian Communication and Multimedia (MCMC) head (Sarawak), Roslan Mohamad, reminded the people to be careful when going online. He noted that some users had turned to online business to boost their income.

“This is a very powerful tool that will produce positive results when used wisely. Never use it for spreading incorrect information or engage in negative purposes.” He said it would take a while to set up PI1M across the state due to the state’s vastness.
