MIRI: One minute 52 seconds. That is all it took for supermarket salesman Ling Sui Hock, 37, to finish a 500-gram giant burger measuring 16cm by 20cm at Bintang Megamall yesterday.

He not only beat 13 others at the second Giant Burger Eating Contest, which was organised by Bintang Megamall and Meritz Hotel Miri, but created a record, too. The old mark was three minutes 18 seconds.

For his feat, Ling went home RM300 richer, won a two-day-one-night stay at Meritz Hotel with breakfast for two, a RM100 food voucher, and a hamper. There were nine consolation winners – Steven Su, Yeo Nam Soon, Azman Matnor, Harmanito Matnor, Christopher Teng, Wong Ing Chai, Charles Vishun Robesh, Melvin Thye and Lee Sze Pheng. They were rewarded with a RM50 food voucher and a hamper each. Su, who also participated in the first edition, lost the eating match to Ling by a whisker – one second.

Meanwhile, Miri Housing Group of Companies’ chief operations manager, John Teo, said he was thrilled to see an encouraging response towards the burger eating contest.

“This year’s event is sweeter as the winner broke last year’s time. We hope everyone greatly enjoyed the contest and the taste of Meritz’ own signature burger.” The giant burger has been a star attraction of Meritz Hotel ever since it was introduced last

year.
