CAMERON HIGHLANDS: Almost 500,000 vehicle registration transactions were conducted via the online vehicle registration system to date, according to Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai.

He said the transactions were carried out without having to submit registration documents at Road Transport Department (RTD) counters.

“After the process of registering online is complete, the seller, distributor or owner can go to a RTD counter to get a print out of the grant and road tax.

“So, with this system, the public do not have to turn up in person at RTD counters to register their vehicles and this will ease congestion at RTD counters,” he told reporters after opening a new RTD branch here, yesterday.

In addition, he said RTD had also introduced a borderless registration of vehicles, allowing registrations at any RTD office nationwide, except Labuan and Langkawi.

“This system eases the burden of the public and reduces costs. For example, one can register at the Cameron Highlands office, if one wants to use a Johor registration number. Prior to this, we have to go to Johor to use a Johor registration,” he said.

In the meantime, Liow announced that his ministry allowed the use of rear drawers of not more than two metres on small lorries in Cameron Highlands following appeals and grouses of the related industry.

“The construction and usage of a rear drawer is subject to the guideline fixed by RTD. The guideline will be implemented on July 1,” he said.

Liow said the ministry had no problems approving the installation of additional side fences and back metal fences on vegetable transporters in Cameron Highlands.

In addition, he said Rule 16(1)(c) Methods of Motor Vehicle (Registration and Licensing) 1959, had approved the reduction of licensing rate of Motor Vehicle License (LKM) by 90 per cent for vehicles transporting vegetables which were used in Cameron Highlands. — Bernama
