KUALA LUMPUR: A weak earthquake, with a magnitude of 3.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 6.49pm in Ranau, Sabah, yesterday, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

A statement issued by the department to Bernama said the epicentre of the earthquake was located at 6.1 degrees north and 116.5 degrees east, about 25km northwest of Ranau.

Meanwhile, in Kota Kinabalu, police said no evacuation order had been implemented following several minor landslides at the foot of Mount Kinabalu.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abdul Rahman said after the 5.9 magnitude earthquake on June 5, several villagers in Ranau claimed to have witnessed landslides at the foot of Mount Kinabalu on Wednesday.

“Police have received several reports of minor landslides or loose rocks in Kota Belud, but there were no reports of tremors.

“At the moment, police will not implement any evacuation order.

“I want to advise villagers at the foot of Mount Kinabalu to take precautions against the possibility of mud flood in their areas,” he said yesterday after several villagers from Kampung Kiau, Kampung Kaung, Kampung Lobong-Lobong and Kampung Melangkap claimed to have heard roaring sounds, followed by falling loose rocks, from the mountain.

Video clips of the landslide have also gone viral in social media.
