SINGAPURA: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim said Singapore was admired for not depending on the model of a welfare state, as seen in European countries.

She said although the country’s system was based on free market competition, every citizen was guaranteed education, healthcare, housing and good retirement benefits.

Rohani, who is currently on a three-day working visit to the island republic, said the visit was aimed at sharing best practices implemented by Singapore for target groups, especially women, children, the disabled, senior citizens and families.

As part of her first official visit to Singapore as the Women, Family and Community Development minister, she paid a courtesy call on her counterpart, Tan Chuan-Jin, Minister for Social and Family Development, as well as Halimah Yacob, Singapore’s Parliament Speaker.

Rohani also led a delegation from her ministry to visit the NTUC Silver Circle, Society for the Physically Disabled and the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisations to find out the best practices and challenges faced in caring for target groups in Singapore. — Bernama
